How it works
For each day, the first 8 hours are regular time. Hours from 8 up to 12 are paid at time and a half, even if you did not work 40 hours that week, and hours over 12 are paid at double time.
For the week, hours over 40 are paid at time and a half, but only the first 8 hours of each day count toward the 40. Hours that already count as daily overtime are paid once, at the overtime rate.
This covers the standard rules. Averaging agreements, statutory holidays, the weekly rest period and some industries and occupations follow different rules.

Daily: hours 0-8 at 1x, hours 8-12 at 1.5x, hours over 12 at 2x
Weekly: regular-time hours (first 8 each day) over 40 move to 1.5x
Total = sum of (hours x rate x multiplier)Example
At 25 per hour working 9 hours Monday to Friday (45 hours), each day has 1 hour of daily overtime. The first 8 hours of each day total 40, so no weekly overtime is added. Regular pay is 40 x 25 = 1,000 and the 5 overtime hours pay 5 x 37.50 = 187.50, for a total of 1,187.50.
Frequently asked questions
When does overtime start in British Columbia?
Time and a half applies to hours over 8 in a day, and to hours over 40 in a week. Hours over 12 in a day are paid at double time.
Do hours over 8 a day count toward the weekly 40?
Only the first 8 hours worked each day count toward the weekly 40 hours. Hours that are already daily overtime are not counted again.
Can I be paid for overtime and for a statutory holiday at once?
The same hours do not earn both. On a statutory holiday an employee gets an average day's pay plus time and a half for the hours worked, and those hours do not also earn overtime.
Can I bank overtime instead of being paid?
Yes, an employee can ask in writing to bank overtime and later ask for payment or paid time off. The employer can close the bank with notice, under rules set by the province.
Does a salary mean no overtime?
No. Overtime is owed whether you are paid hourly, by salary or by commission, unless you fall under an exemption such as some managers.
