How it works

To apply a percentage raise, multiply your current pay by one plus the percentage as a decimal. A 5% raise multiplies pay by 1.05.

To work out the percentage from two amounts, subtract the old pay from the new pay, divide by the old pay and multiply by 100.

New pay = Current pay x (1 + Raise %) Raise % = (New pay - Current pay) / Current pay x 100

Example

A 5% raise on 50,000 gives 52,500, an increase of 2,500. Going from 50,000 to 53,000 is a 6% raise.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate a percentage raise?

Divide the increase by your current pay and multiply by 100. For example, going from 50,000 to 53,000 is an increase of 3,000, which is 6% of 50,000.

Is a raise before or after tax?

The calculation works on whatever figure you enter. Use gross pay to see the gross change. Your net increase can be smaller in progressive tax systems.

How do I know if a raise is good?

Compare it with inflation in your country and with typical increases in your field. A raise below inflation means your purchasing power drops even though your pay goes up.

Does this work for hourly pay?

Yes. Enter your current hourly rate and the percentage, and the new pay is also hourly. Ignore the monthly figure in that case.
